Discreet by character, detached by choice, Konstantin Grcic makes no bones about the real meaning of things and of doing design. Every project has a precise reason for being, never making simplicity into a style. As demonstrated by the latest products designed for Plank and Azucena.
“To create a chair is always a challenge”, Grcic remarks.
“Every chair has its own personality. I believe it is possible to always make new ones, because chairs are like human beings, no two are alike. Chairs follow the changes in societies. On their own, they would suffice to write a history of design, but also to narrate different cultures. I can design chairs not because I know more about it, but because I spend a lot of time thinking about them and I know what to observe. Designing everyday products is interesting, because they represent something very real, with which people have a close relationship”.
Avus is a lounge chair for hotels, homes and contract, marked by a surprising solution based on the relationship between the rigid chassis and the soft inner seat. The lower chassis in plastic is made with the twin sheet technique that shapes the material, making it structural. The bonding between the rigid seat and the soft part inside is resolved by borrowing a construction method from luggage, making use of a zipper. Michael Plank, who works in the Bolzano-based firm alongside Martin, grandson of the founder, personally monitors the projects of Grcic, in an assiduous relationship of collaboration, since 2003; he is fascinated by Avus and bets that it will be a success, like all their other products designed by Konstantin.
